[Was it all a jream?] Chapter 002 - First Event: The Nose Lift
Continued from Chapter 001: Eyelid Olympics
A figure solidifies before him from the shadows of dust, looking dazed. It's a man with droopy-eyes and short spikey brown hair, combed back. He is wearing a baggy blue jeans with a loose t-shirt that has the words "Eyes On Me" in bold letters. There are tiny facial stubs showing, a sign of depression.
Pu sighs; back to work. And he was just getting to the good part in the Legend of Adlez: Four Nunchucks Adventure on his Odnetnin Gamesphere.
The newcomer notices Pu staring at him and takes a step back. "I am Pu of the shadow world," says Pu in a calm and soothing voice. "Welcome."
The newcomer looks at him as if he saw a familiar face. "Do I know you from somewhere?" he asked. "Oh I get it. Of course. I’m dreaming. We always see familiar faces in our dreams."
Pu didn't pay attention to what the newcomer was saying; he was analyzing the live data feed that was streaming in from the Outernet about the newcomer.
"So... perhaps you could give me the standard explanation-of-what’s-going-on speech at least?" asked the newcomer.
Pu looks up. "Yes. I was just about to get to that. You have entered the world of what’s seen in your world as shadow. To you, our world is seen as shadow. To us, your world forms our shadows. Since you have managed to foolishly land yourself in our world, you have turned into a shadow. Quite interesting actually."
"OK this is kinda cool, but creeping me out. I really need to wake up now." Jerms starts to pince himself vigorously, panic sewn across his face.
"No need to concern yourself with such mundane methodology. You are awake, I can assure you. Instead of hurting yourself, why not ask about the reason you are here?" Before Jerms could speak, Pu cut him off. "It says here that five years ago, you were the reigning World Champion of the Eyelid competition. Four years ago, you took part in the Eyelid Olympics, but failed to win a gold metal. Ever since, you've been training hard so that you may win the gold in this year's Eyelid Olympics. However, about two months ago, you partaked in a Eyelid duel against a junior, who happened to be only 16 years old, just because he called you an 'Sore Eye Loser'. You lost. That sent you into a whirlpool of depression and taken you out of the race for the Olympics. If you cannot beat a 16-year old, how can you take on the professionals? Am I right, so far?"
Jerms was deftly quiet. Tiny sparks of angry flames seems to be fly right out of his eyes. This is actaully getting interesting, Pu thought.
"I take your silence as a 'Yes', then," Pu continued. "In any event, you have great potential. Or had, that is, until you wasted it on boos and the likes. You have the ability to see both worlds, the Shadow and the Real, as clearly as if you're looking through a window pane. There are relatively few who possess such abilities. I am one of them."
"For some reasons, by the Caring One's Will, you have been sent to me so that you may redeem this ability. I am to be your teacher, your mentor, your shadow. If you are to win the Eyelid Olympics, I suggest that you heed my every orders."
Silence.
Pu was about to talk again, when Jerms suddenly blurts out, "I don't need no stinking teacher! I don't want your stupid mentoring! What do you know about Eyelid competition? Its hardships, its pain... You don't know. You can't know." He was silent for a bit, but then shouted, "I want to go home now!"
"Only by the Caring One's Will."
"To Hell with your Caring One's Will, your, um, COW! I want to go home NOW!" Jerms begins to storm toward Pu. In his current shadow state, Pu knows that Jerms couldn't do anything to him, but he held up a hand anyhow.
"Fine, let us play a game then," says Pu. "A wager, perhaps? If you win, I'll release you from the Caring One's Bond. It's a simple game, really."
"A game? What kind of game?" Jerms starts to calm down. It seems to Pu that he had said a magic word or something.
"Simple. It's called Nose Lift. I got a piece of thing string here." Pu produces a long string in his hand. "It is easily broken." Pu demonstrates by snapping it in half. "You will lie down on your back and I will hold you down with this thin piece of string. If you can get stand up without using either hands to touch the string, then I will consider you the victor and release you from the bond. On the other hand, if you are unable, then you must be my deciple and listen to AND obey every words I say. Are you game?"
Jerms looks at Pu suspiciously, deciding whether to trust him or not. "And what if I say no?" he asks.
"Then you will stay as a shadow in our world and nothing more for eternity. You will not live, you will not die. You will just exists as a shadow, alone in the dark as you are part of the dark."
"That's not much of a choice is it?" Jerms smirks. "Well, couldn't hurt to try. Alright, I'm game."
You'll be surprise by how much it hurts, thought Pu devishly. But what came out of his mouth was, "Now lie down. You may not move until I say 'Go!'."
Jerms got down on the floor and proceed to lie on his back. Once he was ready, Pu measures an arm length of string and fold it in half twice. Then he tightens the string and got down on his knees. "Are you ready?" Pu asks. Jerms nods. "Go!" With a swift motion, he place the string underneath Jerms' nose and jerks it slightly toward himself and downward, painfully putting pressure underneath the nose. Jerms' eyes widen as the pain hits his brain and he shouts out some foul language. He tries to get up but to no avail: the pain was just too much.
Finally he concedes as the tears start to stream down his eyes. Pu stands up, releasing Jerms from his bondage. Jerms quickly got up, rubs his nose and makes an angry face. "Well, it appears I have won the game," Pu says.
"That's cheating!!" Jerms says defiantly. "As well as painful... You didn't say anything abuse."
"Cheat? I do not cheat, I suppress information. You assumed that this piece of string is harmless and, therefore, easily broken. I cannot be blame for your assumptions. Besides, you should have gotten a hint from the name of the game, Nose Lift. Just shows how unobservant you are and how much in need you are of my aid. Mind you, that was just the first event of a series in which I am to teach you.
"Now, will you be a man or a shadow of your word?"
Relunctantly, Jerms nods his head. "If that was the first event, I'm scared to know of what the others are link," he says beneath his breath.
Pu smiles. Be scared. Be very scared.
